Grading Labs: Are They All The Same?

The simple and short answer is no, there is a considerable difference between quality grading labs. Just as there can be a large difference between two diamonds, even diamonds with the same grade so can there be large differences in grading labs.

The first things you will want to ensure is that your chosen lab upholds strict guidelines on their grading. A diamond lab that grades everything as excellent is certainly not a good grading lab. Labs such as IGI or GIA are strict in their rules and more importantly consistent which ensures that when you do get an 'excellent' it really is.

Another issue to consider is that some jewellery companies use their own in-house grading labs. In certain cases these are a similar level to independent labs but more often than not the grading reports are not true to the diamonds characteristics. It is important to therefore ensure that any diamond over 0.3 carat is certified by a reputable lab. If you have any doubt about the accuracy of the grading then ask the diamond to be sent to another lab, which you can reccomend. A good jeweller selling good quality diamonds will not object to this.

Most importantly never feel pressured into buying a diamond you are not completely happy with or that you do not completely trust as accurate. Make sure your diamond is as brilliant as you want it to be.
